"If you don’t want to speak English, please feel free to return to that shit-hole of a country you left."
Saw this on a bumper sticker while I was loading groceries into my car. Raged.
First, you unkind and rude person who tacked this to your car - you go and try learning English when you’re above adolescent years. The difficultly of learning a new language increases exponentially as one grows older, so for those who are actually able to become fluent as an adult, it’s a major, major accomplishment. More often than not, immigrants who do become fluent are able to do so because they were exposed to the language at a very young age, either through learning it in their home countries, migrating to the United States while they were still children, or being fortunate enough to be born in the US as citizens to immigrant parents.
Curious about why immigrants left their “shit-hole” countries in the first place? Because the United States has to get its greedy hands involved in everyone else’s business. Whether it’s through sending our tax dollars to Israel so they have money to bomb Gaza, providing for more funding for the “war on drugs”, or increasing the Border Patrol’s budget, the US can be blamed for the countless states of varying countries across the globe that are also experiencing economic and humanitarian crises.
As one example - the beginning of 1994 saw the United States implementing the North American Free Trade Agreement, in which Canada and Mexico were required to end all tariffs on a large number of exported and imported goods to and from the US. In no sense was this an “agreement”, at least between the people it was purported to help. Since its implementation, the maquiladora industry has come to define the economy of Mexican border towns - parts are assembled on the Mexican side, using under-paid Mexican workers working in incredibly unsafe conditions, and then sent to the US for further refinement. NAFTA also utterly devastated small, independent Mexican farmers whose primary income came from work in family-owned mills or agricultural fields. Farmers could no longer compete with cheap imports from the United States. The demand for their products virtually disappeared. Left with very little opportunities in Mexico and unable to support their families, many Mexican workers left for the United States in search of work. This trend has continued ever since.
This arrogant attitude has in itself contributed to migration to the United States. While our government continues to proclaim that the US is the greatest nation on earth, bursting with opportunities, the melting pot of all melting pots, the land where anyone can make it big if they simply work hard - the government, at the same time, erects countless miles of border fencing and walls and increases its budget for the U.S. Border Patrol, effectively saying, look, this is the land of opportunity, you can make it here - but only if we say you can. For the millions of undocumented workers who chased after this dream, who work 40+ hours per week at jobs that Americans will not take, often in degrading and inhumane conditions - the American dream will only ever be a dream. And your arrogant attitude isn’t helping. It’s doing the opposite.
Next time you sit down to eat a side salad at your favorite restaurant, or the next time you’re in the vegetable section of your local grocery store, or the next time you complain about your 9-5 office job, I want you to remember the millions of people who have it much, much worse than you do. I want you to think about every word that comes out of your mouth and how your words can hurt people more than you will ever know.
I want you to open your mind.
